Thank you Bill!

It’s a great honor to be supported by Bill McKibben, a world-wide leader in the fight against climate change.

I have always appreciated Bill’s clear-eyed message to his fellow citizens:

  • climate change is real, demonstrable, and already happening—not “coming”

  • the daily choices we make have an impact on climate change

  • we are, therefore, responsible

  • let’s accept that responsibility and then live up to it — respecting all forms of life by ceasing to damage our small, blue home planet.

I have accepted that responsibility in the form of serving in the Vermont legislature, where I chair the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee. I have worked since 2007 with my colleagues to create a suite of integrated laws, policies, and programs that have helped Vermont lead the way on clean renewable generation, weatherization, and efficiency.

I recently introduced a Community Scale Energy bill to help us expand the opportunity to use clean electricity in the estimated 80% of Vermont homes that are not suited to the installation of their own solar. There is more work to be done there, and if re-elected, I will continue this work.

I also led the development of new proposals to greatly expand our movement from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles. The state is taking modest first steps, and again there is much more work to be done.

We need to continue to support our nation-leading energy efficiency work, and to expand our work on weatherization—as the cleanest and least expensive energy of all is the energy we do not use.

All of these bills and programs represent a great economic opportunity: to cut the billions of dollars we ship out of state buying in fossil-fuel-powered energy (electricity, gas, diesel, propane, natural gas) and instead to produce clean, renewable substitutes right here in Vermont — keeping our dollars home and damaging fossil fuels out.

WHAT BILL McKIBBEN ESPOUSES, and what he and his 350.org colleagues in Vermont and around the world have been working for, I have been living at home and in the Vermont Senate.

I hope you will follow Bill’s activist lead:
• SHARE the news of his endorsement, and
• VOTE and TURN OUT your friends to vote.

I ask for your support once again at the polls. Let’s keep moving forward on climate change.

With gratitude,

—Chris
